Our History
Stoneham Reads originally grew out of the Stoneham Public Schools Committee Subcommittee on Dismantling Structural Racism. With the desire to bring the conversation about racism to the larger community, Stoneham Reads was born as an ongoing reading program for the community to gather and share books and their themes. The first book is focused on racial history and social justice, Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, And You (see below). As we join in reading and talking and learning together, we feel we can make Stoneham a better place for all to live. |
What is Stoneham Reads?![]() Stoneham Reads is a community-building project in Stoneham, MA. All are invited to read the same book and participate in related activities to foster connections, promote an appreciation of our town and have fun.
All are welcome! 2021 Book Choice and EventsThis year’s book choice is Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, And You by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi. Given the pandemic, all events will be virtual during this pilot year. In subsequent years, events will be held in common town spaces and local restaurants.
As part of the inaugural Stoneham Reads year, the Stoneham CDC, with generous support from local nonprofit organizations, local foundations, businesses, community groups and individuals, offered training in Facilitating Conversations across Race and Intersectionality to Stoneham Reads Facilitators and to representatives from Stoneham organizations and businesses to build capacity within Stoneham among residents, organizations and businesses for ongoing conversations about race in our community.
